PRAGUE: Study Abroad 2011


OVERVIEW

Global Players is the first ever study abroad program designed specifically for student-athletes like you. We strive to educate beyond the four walls of the classroom. Our academic partner ESAC, the European Study Abroad Center, offers a comprehensive four-week program including academic courses taught by kyle renyhighly qualified faculty; unique networking opportunities with business leaders and entrepreneurs from the local community; guided city tours; and numerous cultural opportunities. You are guided through the logistics of getting settled in your host city and assisted with all aspects of adjusting to local customs and traditions. Courses offered through the University of Economics in Prague include:

  • Eastern European History
  • International Business
  • Global Marketing
  • Small Business Management
  • Business Law
  • Czech language and culture

Global Players Study Abroad Prague offers a unique combination of academic coursework and athletic training. The second pillar in our Learn. Play. Travel. Serve. philosophy is particularly important as sports are able to unite people across the world who share a common passion, irrespective of language and cultural barriers. GP takes you through Germany and the Czech Republic to compete with and against international lacrosse players. In addition to playing in the most famous international tournaments, you will complete a dynamic weekly training program with the local players. No fear of gettin' rusty this summer – this is your chance to have your cake and eat it too – study abroad AND stay in shape for season!sami

Prague is one of, if not the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s known for being the city of ‘100 Spires’ amidst the many tourist sites, shopping, and nightlife attractions. From your dorm room, go rollerblading in the nearby park, catch a tram to Old Town and hike up to the castle, or buy trinkets and gifts on the Charles Bridge. Even going to class everyday is an adventure! They are held at the University of Economics facility, located in the center of Prague.

COURSES AND CREDENTIALS

Each class is worth four (4) US credit hours or seven (7) ECTS credits. All students can also take the informative Czech language and culture course for free. Additional courses may be added depending on enrollment. These may include Business Law, Small Business Management or Executive Leadership. (Note: If one of these courses particularly interests you, or you would like to arrange an independent study, please contact us for more information)

Students can choose max. 2 courses (in addition to Czech language and protocol class). Either Global Marketing or History and International Business.

2011 Courses Offered (2011 courses will be posted Fall 2010)

  • Czech language and culture (required, free of charge/not for credit)
  • Central and Eastern European History and Politics or Global Marketing
  • International Business

You will need to provide the course syllabi to your respective university's Dean and/or Academic Adviser. for credit transfer.

Example of a typical day:

Class will be held in the morning in a modern classroom facility, followed by lunch and afternoon site visit to Microsoft to listen to a senior level Microsoft manager talk about marketing strategies in Eastern Europe. Your evening may consist of a picnic in the park with friends and their guitars or you might sneak off to have a real medieval times experience with belly dancers, flame throwers, and a feast of course!

Details on program inclusions:

  • Airport pick-up in Berlin
  • University of Economics tuition and academic transcript
  • Seminars, guest speakers, and course materials: All study books and reading materials are provided.
  • Accommodation: A combination of hostels, self-catering apartments, and homestays will be provided during the first three weeks of the program. For the remaining four weeks, students will live in the University of Economics dorms located in the residential neighborhood of Holesovice (Prague 7) in a recently renovated early 20th Century building, close to public transportation. Travel time from the dorms to the classroom is about 20 minutes using public transportation. There is a large park across the street and numerous restaurants and pubs nearby.   • Meals: A meal plan consisting of breakfast and lunch are provided Mon - Fri at the University during the study abroad portion of the program. Several dinners will also be provided including a Medieval feast and entertainment one evening.
  • Ground transportation: Students who take part in courses are given a Prague public transport pass for their entire stay so they can explore and enjoy the city to the fullest extent.
  • Amazing Race: An overnight stay in a medieval village in Bohemia is also included. Students will stay in a hotel overlooking the panorama of this historical village. Students will be divided into teams and given the name of a hotel in this village. The teams must follow the clues to find this city and the hotel and will compete against each other to arrive first in the town. Students must then follow more clues from their hotel to locate their advisors and the winning team receives a prize!
  • Site visits to businesses: Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Deloitte, KAP Environmental Firm, Herald Brewery, Ernst & Young, IKEA, and more.
  • Tournament fees and registrationgraz sunset
  • Guided tours of the cities: Bike Tour in Berlin and Munich plus additional walking tours
  • GP Gear: Practice gear and coaching shirt  for events and team travel
  • Out of Bounds Tour: 7-10 day city hop through Austria and Germany where student-athletes have the opportunity to really impact international lacrosse development. All ground transportation included.
  • Networking opportunities and cultural events: Throughout your stay you will meet many local and international business contacts. Make a good impression and secure future opportunities!
  • FUN: Make new friends and have an amazing summer!
 
Site Visits: Class sessions will be followed by afternoon site visits to locally run, internationally operating businesses in Prague. Some site visits are scheduled while others will be arranged

TO APPLY: All candidates are required to complete the online application form. The application process is the same for all other programs with the exception of material submissions. You will be asked to complete a phone interview and submit two references, one academic and one athletic as part of the application process. Please be advised that your application will not be considered active until you submit the $75 application fee.
